LEGENDS of the airwaves including Mike Read will be in Somerset for a special broadcast on Bank Holiday Monday.

Former Radio One Breakfast Show, and TV presenter Mike will be joined by the likes of former Radio Luxembourg legend Tony Prince for a live broadcast from Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier.

The duo will be joined by North Somerset-based Tony Miles – aka ‘Smiley Miley’ – who was the driving force behind the Radio One Roadshow for decades.

Mike and Tony Prince are two of the many familiar voices which can now be heard on United DJs radio station, a new national radio station, whose other broadcasting legends include Emperor Rosko, Dave ‘Kid’ Jensen, David Hamilton and many more.

On Monday, as part of a week-long tour around the North Somerset coast, Tony Prince’s afternoon show will be broadcast nationwide from the Grand Pier between 3pm and 5pm.

Mike Read will also be on hand, and with Smiley Miley there too, there’s every chance that their infamous practical-joking and banter which formed a favourite feature of the Radio One roadshows, will also return.

On one occasion, Mike got Smiley enlisted in the army for a weekend, had him put in the stocks, dyed his hair green, and had him regressed and paint-balled by army boys disguised as nuns.

Smiley could give as good as he got, however, and used to pull stunts on both Mike and his beloved car, dropping it from a crane into a boating lake, removing the engine, the wheels and the car.

While next Monday’s performance is an outside broadcast rather than a roadshow, with Mike and Smiley Miley both in attendance, it’s almost inevitable that something unexpected is going to happen.

Their banter was so well-known that, on one occasion, Prince Philip met Mike at a Buckingham Palace function and not only asked him which roadshow he would be covering that year, but also asked what stunts were being lined up.

United DJs was launched by veteran broadcasters from Radio One, Radio Luxembourg, Capital Radio and Radio Caroline to recapture the “free radio” days of yesteryear, when the presenters themselves had a much greater say in what they played and what they said.

As well as being a presenter of Radio One’s Breakfast Show, Mike Read was a regular face on TV, fronting Top of the Pops, Saturday Superstore and Pop Quiz.

Tony Prince progressed from being a performer to presenter on pirate radio’s famous Radio Caroline North before a 16-year career on Radio Luxembourg, after which he launched Disco Mix Club.

Tony, who founded and launched United DJs Radio, said: “The people who became DJs out of their love for music are shaping United DJs Radio.

“The DJs can play just what they like within a format of a seven-decade mix, but they must play an element of new music releases, too. The DJs are, in effect, their own programme directors.”

Lucy Graham, marketing manager for the Grand Pier, said: “We’re thrilled to be hosting some legendary names from the world of radio at the Pier for what we are hoping will provide something extra special on Bank Holiday Monday.

“Many people will have happy memories of visiting the Radio 1 Roadshow when it came to Weston, and with Mike Read and Smiley Miley undoubtedly getting up to their antics again, it’s sure to be a very entertaining day.

“United DJs Radio has had a hugely successful first year of operating and we’re delighted that they’re coming here for an outside broadcast.”
