DETECTIVES are trying to piece together events leading up to a man being discovered critically injured at the foot of a cliff in Somerset.

Police were alerted to an injured man discovered by Birnbeck Pier, in Weston-super-Mare, at 12.30am yetersday (Sunday).

Officers gave first aid until the arrival of the ambulance service.

The injured man was recovered with the support of the Weston-super-Mare Coastguard and was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

He remains in a critical condition. His family have been informed.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "We’re carrying out investigations to establish what happened.

"We need to hear from you if you were in the area of Birnbeck Pier around midnight on Saturday, June 1 into Sunday June 2.

"Officers are particularly interested in hearing from the person who approached the emergency services at the time, crucially allowing for a quick response to the injured man."
