MOTORISTS will be relieved to know that Bridgwater's one-way system around Wylds Road will finish this week.

The works by Somerset County Council have been putting in place improvements to walking and cycling routes in Bridgwater, but have at times exacerbated traffic problems in the already busy town.

Cycle paths and footways between the Wylds Road/The Drove junction and the A39 Bath Road have been upgraded, as has the pavement on Bristol Road.

Meanwhile Wales & West Utilities has also replaced the gas main under Wylds Road.

To minimise disruption, these schemes were carried out at the same time, avoiding the need for further major roadworks in the immediate area in the near future.

Councillor John Woodman, cabinet member for highways and transport at Somerset County Council said: “This is a real success story of a collaborative approach; by combining numerous contractors’ planned works into a single, complex traffic management system, we were able to get four schemes delivered at once avoiding the need for further works and disruption in the area.

“I would like to thank the Bridgwater community and travelling public for bearing with us whilst these essential improvements were completed.”

The improvements will make cross-town travel easier and will specifically benefit young people travelling to and from Bridgwater College and Chilton Trinity School.

The Bridgwater Way project is delivering a host of travel improvements to existing roads and junctions, as well as miles of new and improved routes for pedestrians and cyclists across the town and surrounding areas in a bid to reduce congestion.
