A warning has been issued by the Cumberland Building Society after reports of a phone scam.
The building society has been made aware of a pre-recorded message encouraging customers to give out their banking details.
A spokesman for the lender said: "We’re aware of a telephone scam where a pre-recorded message will advise you that you have made a payment of £600 and should select a number on your phone keypad to speak to someone about a refund.
"The scammer will then proceed to ask for your internet banking or card details.
"If you receive a call like this or any other call that doesn’t seem right, end the call.
"If you’re concerned about your accounts you should wait at least 10 minutes before calling us, and ideally you should do this from a separate telephone number."
The lender wants to remind people that scammers will try to sound legitimate and you should always be 100 per cent certain about who you're talking to before handing out any information.
