A CAR has been destroyed after it collided with a lamppost and caught fire in Burnham-on-Sea. 

Emergency services were called to Burnham Road at around 7.50pm today (July 25) following reports of a car fire. 

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police, said: "We were called at 7.52pm to Burnham Road in Burnham-on-Sea following reports of a crash. 

"A car was in collision with a lampost and then caught on fire. 

"Everyone was free and clear of the vehicle when we arrived and no one was injured. 

"We closed the road as electrical wires from the lampost were live in the road."

Firefighters from Burnham-on-Sea also went to the scene. 

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Two fire appliances from Burnham on Sea attended a car that had caught fire after hitting a lamp post.

"All persons were out of the vehicle and the police were on scene.

Crews put the fire out using compressed air foam and one hose reel jet.

"The vehicle was severely destroyed and the cause of the fire was accidental. Duty of care was left with the police who had cordoned off the area."
