SAINTS prop Luke Thompson was singled out for praise on Friday - by opposition coach Chris Chester.

The powerhouse front rower lead the charge against Wakefield in what was a potential banana skin after a tumultuous week at Saints.

With Thompson and skipper James Roby excelling, Saints secured the win, which combined with Warrington's defeat in France, meant Saints have won the League Leaders Shield for the second year running.

Thompson said: “It was really positive to back up last week’s cup win.

"The semi-final was a big game for us so to back it up against a Wakefield side who were really up for it tonight given the position they are in the league, it was a really good win.

“The first 10 minutes we soaked up pressure and stayed in the game and responded with a few tries.

“We’ve got two big games before we get to Wembley, but we are taking it week by week we are still going to turn up and give our best performance.

"We need to win every game and train really hard to give our best.”
