A NEW series of sponsored runs is set to take place later this year in support of the Chard mayor’s chosen charities.

Cllr Jason Baker has organised for a 1k, 5k and 10k race to take place next month as part of his fundraising drive.

Cash collected by the events will be split between Cancer Research UK, the Memory Cafe in support of Alzheimer’s, mental health charity South Somerset MIND, and Little Daffodils baby and infant loss support service.

The three new fun runs are due to take place on September 8.

The starting line will be the Lace Mill car park.

The runs are set to get underway from 10am.

Cllr Baker said: “I wanted to organise an event that everyone of all abilities and ages could get involved in, which is where I came up with the idea of The Chard Fun Run.

“You can take part in either the 1k, 5k or 10k and raise money for some great charities.

“It will be great to see people getting involved and raising money for such good causes, and I am looking forward to perhaps seeing some people in fancy dress.”

The 1K course has been designed to be suitable for buggies and wheelchair users.

Liz Johnson-Idan, community liaison officer, added: “We hope everyone will come out to support the good causes while getting a bit of fresh air and exercise.

“Sponsor forms will be available at the Guildhall and look out for more information on Facebook.”

Last year’s mayor, Cllr Garry Shortland, raised more than £5,000 for his chosen charities.

The fun runs will be the first major fundraiser Cllr Baker has held in support of his chosen charities since taking over the role earlier this year.
