School children from Llanwrtyd Wells have collected more batteries than any other Powys school.

Ysgol Dolafon won a battery recycling competition run by Powys County Council and sponsored by ERP UK which saw the school collect an impressive 3.49kg of batteries per pupil.

More than 12,000 schoolchildren from across Powys collected 3.3 tonnes of batteries between September 2018 and April 2019.

Cllr Beverley Baynham, chairman of Powys County Council presented £250 worth of Amazon vouchers to pupils and teachers from Ysgol Dolafon. Second place went to Llanbedr Church in Wales School, near Crickhowell, who receive £150 of Amazon vouchers, and Radnor Valley CP School gained £100 worth of Amazon vouchers for finishing third.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Waste and Recycling, said: “It is encouraging to see Powys children show such enthusiasm and commitment to recycling and the local environment, particularly collecting so many batteries at home and at school and preventing these materials being disposed of to landfill.

“Thank you to everyone who took part in this worthwhile competition and well done to Ysgol Dolafon for winning the competition.”
