A SCORNED man who cut the brakes on his ex-partner's car because he thought she was off to see a new boyfriend has been jailed.

Father-of-three Raymond Hislop, 54, sabotaged Victoria Tomlin's Peugeot after their 12-year relationship ended.

The pair continued to lived together despite the split, but Miss Tomlin stormed out of the home following an argument in August 2018 - and jilted Hislop struck.

Susan Cavender, prosecuting, said: "He was upset. She went out and the defendant was at home. He cut the brake cable to her Peugeot."

Miss Tomlin later returned home, got ready to go out and went to her car.

Ms Cavender told Bristol Crown Court: "She noticed the garage door was open.

"The defendant was in the garage, watching her. He looked flustered, sweaty and shifty.

He said he was looking for a screwdriver."

Miss Tomlin got in her car and reversed. But when she tried to brake, nothing happened.

Hislop moved towards her and she asked him if he had cut the brakes.

He tried to reach into the car to stop her, but she drove off before managing to halt the vehicle and call police.

Officers found wire cutters near to where Hislop had been standing and discovered a brake cable on the Peugeot had been cut.

James Tucker, defending, said: "There was a late and ineffectual attempt to stop her driving. She explained the relationship was over.

"He behaved in a way which was criminal, dangerous and utterly unacceptable."

Hislop, of Griffin Road, Clevedon, near Bristol, pleaded guilty to causing a danger to road users by interfering with a vehicle.

Judge Julian Lambert, in jailing Hislop for two years on Thursday (05/11) said: "What you did was premeditated and cynical."

He imposed a restraining order banning Hislop from contact with Miss Tomlin for three years.

Mr Tucker said Hislop had also started a Building Better Relationships course.
