AN ELDERLY woman has been taken to hospital with 'potentially life-threatening' injuries following a crash near Highbridge.

The crash happened this afternoon (September 11) on Bristol Road on the A38 in West Huntspill. 

Bristol Road on the A38 was closed in both directions but it has since reopened.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police, said collision investigators were at the scene. 

The spokesman said: "Emergency services were called just after midday on Wednesday, September 11 to a single-vehicle collision on the A38 Main Road at West Huntspill.

"A car was in collision with a wall. The elderly female driver has gone to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. Her next of kin are being contacted.

"The road remains closed in both directions for collision investigators to examine the scene.

Traffic in Highbridge and Bridgwater was affected and there was a diversion in place via J22 and 23 of the M5.

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service, said: "We were called at 12:05 to reports of a road traffic collision, reportedly involving one vehicle.

"We attended with HART (hazardous area response team), a rapid response vehicle, a doctor, an operations officer and an ambulance.

"One patient was taken to hospital for further treatment."
