It was a rollercoaster week for Somerset vet Rosie as another outstanding showstopper saw her avoid elimination on the Great British Bake Off.

Rosie Brandreth-Poynter, who lives in Shepton Beauchamp and works for Isle Valley Vets, started strongly on week three - the notorious Bread Week.

For the first challenge she baked a brioche-style chilli and Manchego tear and share, which was filled with Mediterranean vegetables and a tangy balsamic reduction.

The Spanish creation won over the judges, and Prue Leith said: “I think that is heaven. I think it is soft and I like the flavour.”

Paul Holywood added: “I think your flavours are fantastic.”

In the technical challenge, contestants had to create a white burger roll, served with a vegetarian burger.

Rosie’s roll ranked lowly, with Paul and Prue handing her ninth spot out of 11.

Heading into final challenge, Paul actually said she was in trouble, and it looked like it would take another stand out showstopper to see her through to week four.

Bakers had to create a display of artistically scored decorative rolls, and Rosie pulled out all the stops with her bread safari. There was a truffle elephant, a black garlic giraffe and a sun-dried tomato lion.

Paul said it was the first time he had eaten grey bread as Rosie’s truffle elephant drew the eye.

He added: “The scoring is very good. What a fantastic effect you have managed to get.

“It could have done with a bit more salt, but it is baked beautifully actually.

“It looks great and it is very artistic.”

Amelia, who admitted after that bread was her weakness, became the third person to leave the tent.

She added: “I didn’t rise to the challenge of bread week exactly, but I literally had so much fun.”

Michael became the first Great British Bake Off contestant to earn a Hollywood handshake this series.

His crimson chilli tear-and-share for Bread Week impressed judge Paul with its detailed patterning and complex taste.

Michael’s roll recreation of a campfire also won him praise, and helped him to seal star baker.

The Great British Bake Off returns on Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
