BRYNCELYN: There is often a story behind gardens that open for the National Garden Scheme with garden owners opening their gardens to raise money for charity despite their own difficult circumstances.

This year David Harbinson and Rosemary Clarke decided to open their garden at Bryncelyn, Llanfyllin.

They wholeheartedly embraced the National Garden Scheme by planning to open for two weekends one in June and one in September and also offering visits by arrangement.

Even when David became very ill they continued with this plan. David passed away on Saturday, August 31.

Nevertheless, Rosemary is still planning to open the garden on September 14 and 15.

She says that those dates were his target to live for.  He may not have managed it but the garden is still here.

Rosemary says that due to the weather and his being unable to get out of the house, the garden will not look as slick as it did in June, but various friends have kept things ticking over.

She would like that weekend opening to be a memorial to David and his ambitions for their garden on behalf of NGS, and in turn their support of the Horatio’s Garden initiative.

This assumed even greater importance over the last two weeks as they realised that in many hospitals, patients are wheeled into the fresh air to sit in front of an entrance with little more than a roadway and carpark to look at.

Bryncelyn is open from 1pm – 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday, September 14 and 15.

You can find Bryncelyn at Lluest Lane, Cwmnantymeichaid, Llanfyllin, SY22 5NE. Admission is £4 for adults, children free.

The photo of David, taken a few years ago, shows his love and pride in the garden.

Stories associated with other gardens can be found on the National Garden Scheme website.

Thanks to the generosity of amazing garden owners, volunteers and visitors, the National Garden Scheme has donated more than £58 million to charity since 1927. Could you help raise even more funds by opening your garden?

To find out more contact the County Organiser, Susan Paynton on 01686 650531.

There are still gardens open in by arrangement in  September and October, so, if want a special afternoon out for your

club or with a group of friends all you need do is contact the owner and arrange a time for an exclusive visit to one of these gardens.

Hello Nick,

This is a special story, and I am afraid the picture we have isn't very good, but it was chosen by Rosemary and is

the best we have.  I do hope you will be able to use it. I understand Carolle Doyle is visiting Bryncelyn on Friday, so I am relying on her to describe the garden.

Many thanks

Helen
