PLANS for 26 new homes in Chilton Polden have been granted permission - despite many concerns from local residents and the parish council.

Persimmon Severn Valley applied to build 26 homes - 13 of which would be affordable, as well as public open space, new access and drainage infrastructure.

The site comprises two small fields covering approximately 0.75 hectares on land adjacent to Hayne Walk in Chilton Polden.

The proposals are for four one-bedroom units, six two-bedroom houses, 13 three-bedroom houses and three four-bedroom homes, and there are 71 parking spaces allocated.

Access would be from the turning on the northern side of Hayne Walk with the new houses arranged along a road running through the site.

The plans had been met with objections from both Chilton Polden Parish Council, and the adjoining Edington Parish Council.

Chilton Polden Parish Council said it was concerned about the safety of junction at Chapel Close due to limited visibility, as well as being worried about the pressure the development would have on the existing drainage system.

They also note that Chilton Polden does not have a school and that the local doctors are already busy, meanwhile Edington Parish Council opposes the plan on grounds of overdevelopment.

Over the course of two consultation events, 52 objections were submitted by local residents.

The site is outside but adjacent to the settlement boundary and would raise £185,460 through the Community Infrastructure Levy.

In the report to members of the development committee, the planning officer states that the highways authority believed the local roads could accommodate the likely additional traffic generated.

The report also states that a drainage strategy provides a plan for sustainably draining the site.

The proposal was granted permission by Sedgemoor District Council development committee, subject to a series of conditions, at its meeting on Tuesday, October 15.
