A WOMAN has died following a serious crash on the M5 southbound near Bridgwater on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to the scene between J22 for Burnham-On-Sea and Junction 23 for Bridgwater after a car had run into the back of a lorry at around 6am.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “The female driver of the car received serious head injuries and was taken to hospital but sadly died over the weekend.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who was on the M5 on Saturday morning who may have seen the incident or has dash cam footage of the collision or shortly before it happened. If you are able to help, please contact us, quoting 5219/265362.”

The lorry driver was treated for shock.

In a statement on Saturday, a spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters from Burnham-on-Sea and Taunton went to the scene.

The spokesperson, said: "Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received a call from a member of the public reporting a road traffic collision.

"Two fire appliances from Burnham-on-Sea and a heavy rescue vehicle from Taunton were immediately mobilised by Fire Control.

"On arrival the incident commander confirmed that a car had run in to the back of a lorry and become stuck under the rear of the lorry with one female casualty still inside the car. 

"Crews quickly got to work to stabilise the vehicle and then set about extricating the casualty from the car using Hydraulic Rescue Equipment."
