Two people had to be rescued by firefighters after the car they were travelling in crashed into a water-filled ditch, writes Phil Hill.

Crews from Martock and Yeovil discovered the vehicle on its side when they arrived at the scene on the A303 eastbound between Cartgate and Ilchester at 21.44pm on Wednesday.

A Martock Fire Station spokesman said: "Crews arrived on scene and requested assistance from a further appliance, sent from Martock.

"Crews stabilised the vehicle using a winch and lines, while paramedics assessed the casualties.

"Ladders were used for access, and crews worked with paramedics to release the two casualties, who were then conveyed to hospital.

"Duty of care was left with the police who also attended the incident."

He added that the "tricky incident could have been a lot worse."
