VOLUNTEERS from a community group are urging people stay vigilant after receiving reports of uninvited callers knocking on doors and asking for money during the coronavirus outbreak.

Helen Groves from Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Coronavirus Community Support said the group has received calls from residents who say they have been approached in their homes by people asking for money to do shopping trips for them.

Helen, who helped to start the group, has reported the issue to the police and urged people who do want help to get in touch with a local volunteer led community group or their local council.

She said: "Unfortunately in the last few days we have received reports of people knocking on older residents doors in the Burnham-on-Sea area offering to take money from them to fetch shopping.

"It may be that these people are trying to do something kind but it may be that they are trying to take money away from people who need it the most.

"I would urge people to please be careful. If you know older residents and want to help that's fine but I would encourage people to please connect with a group as a volunteer and to not knock on the doors of older residents you don't know.

"At best you scare them. At worst you are encouraging trust in strangers and risky interactions.

"I don't know if this is people with good or bad intent but it has been reported to the police because we just cannot know and have to assume the worst.

"I would say to everyone please everyone be aware and warn older friends and relatives that nobody from any legitimate volunteer group would approach you in this way.

"We don't solicit your need. If you need help we need you to contact us.

"If you need help or essential supplies please contact a local community group or your local council.

"Lots of key groups are all working together and are interacting and will appropriately signpost you to the help that you need.

"Please do not give money to people you don't know and haven't approached you through a proper organisation."
