TWO friends have teamed up to organise a big sing-along every week to pay tribute to frontline workers and bring the community together.

Linny Whitcombe from Highbridge and Melissa Elton from Bridgwater started a Facebook group a few weeks ago to encourage people to join a sing-along for NHS workers and now the group has a huge chorus of 2,000 members who sing in praise of the heroes working on the frontline.

The duo also hosts competitions through the group where people can enter for free and win prizes which are donated by local businesses.

Melissa said: "The big sing in Highbridge Burnham and surrounding areas which happens each week brings the community together to show our support to all frontline workers during the coronavirus outbreak.

"We offer weekly competitions and games for everyone so people can join in and support each other through these difficult times.

"I'm currently studying mental health and know that people who are suffering from mental health issues are having to face the fact that they can’t socialise or have loved ones to visit during lockdown.

"For some people it is hugely difficult having to battle your own mind and be alone when your isolated.

"By setting up this group it keeps spirits high. We play games, socialise, have fun and are there to listen if anyone is struggling. It’s all about supporting one another."

Melissa said she has been 'overwhelmed' by the number of people who have already got involved and urged more people to join in the sing-along.

"We sing for all those frontline staff who are still out there risking themselves for others," Melissa said.

"We do a draw only for frontline workers to go into last week a worker won a trip to the races for her and 10 friends

"Local business such as my own and other business we ask upon are coming together to donate prizes. Ollie Exley of Noizee Media donated £50 of Easter eggs and prizes for children at the weekend which was great.

"Linny and I have also put money together to provide vouchers for children’s prizes for competitions.

"During Easter we bought Easter eggs for all children involved in the group.

"I would encourage everyone to get involved and join the sing-along."
