LEARNER drivers are more likely to pass their test first time in Taunton than not, according to official figures.

Of 3,396 first time tests sat in the county town, 53.8 per cent were given the go-ahead to tear up their 'L' plates.

The data from DVSA and analysed by Go Compare shows the easiest place in Somerset to pass first time is Yeovil, where 1,801 of the 2,875 first timers were successful - equating to 62.6 per cent.

Of the Somerset test centres, Weston-super-Mare was slightly ahead of Taunton, with 1,173 of the 2,148 examinees (54.6 per cent) qualifying for a full licence.

While the Somerset towns were among the top six locations in the South West, the hardest places to pass first time in the region are Plymouth, Bodmin and Brislington in Bristol.

Nationally, the toughest centres are in Birmingham and London, which boast a pass rate of around 30 per cent.

If you're prepared to travel, you'll have the best chance of passing first time in Llandrindod Wells (76.3 per cent) or Crieff, Perthshire (74.5 per cent).

Matt Oliver, driving expert from GoCompare said: "Preparation is always the key when it comes to tackling any challenge.

"But there's no harm in looking at extra ways to boost your chances, and choosing a quieter route can keep your nerves at a minimum.

"The most common reason for failure in driving tests is responding incorrectly at lights.

"At busy junctions, it's easy to lose your concentration when surrounded by different distractions - choosing a quieter location is a good way to limit this risk.

"To make sure you're prepared, try to practise in a variety of conditions.

"Once you've chosen your test centre, drive the routes as often as possible, so you can get used to the trickier roads."

Driving tests have been cancelled during lockdown but are planned to resume on July 6, when the industry can expect an influx of learner drivers.

Meanwhile, GoCompare's UK Driving Test Report reveals that on average it costs £647 to pass your test, including on average 22 lessons and a theory test too - and that's just if you pass first-time round.
