A WEST Somerset family braved torrential rain to complete a 100 mile charity bike ride.
On Saturday (August 15) keen cyclist Ronnie Brennan, her daughter Olivia, her partner Andy Chappell and his son Lewis completed the cycling challenge for the Amber Foundation, a local charity which houses and supports troubled young people from across the area.
The team from Dulverton were originally planning to complete the Prudential RideLondon, one of the world’s most popular cycling events, scheduled to take place the same weekend but along with thousands of other mass participation events, RideLondon was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The group decided to partake in the virtual ‘MyRideLondon’ event, setting their own 100 mile course using the roads of Devon and Somerset.
They completed their ride, which involved 5,000 feet of climbing, in 6 hours 15 minutes despite driving rain for the whole 100 miles.
Ronnie, a registered nurse at Musgrove Park Hospital, took up cycling three years ago.
She said: “I’ve been driving past the sign for a few years now and always wanted to know more about the charity and what they did.
“I really like Amber’s ethos that every young person needs a safe place to live and a future and how they make this a reality.”
