CONTROVERSIAL plans to transform a former job centre into flats and a convenience store have been given the green light by Sedgemoor District Council (SDC).

Last month plans were submitted to SDC to change the use of the former Burnham-on-Sea Job Centre in High Street and Regent Street into a new convenience store and eight apartments.

The former job centre closed its doors in March 2008 and has remained derelict for 12 years.

At a meeting last month Burnham and Highbridge Town Council voted unanimously to back the proposals despite concerns from residents.

The town council voted to support the plans on the grounds that a redundant building will be brought back into use and it will be supplying accommodation in a much needed location.

But residents voiced concerns that traffic would increase around Regent Street if the flats and store were built.

Planners from Sedgemoor District Council approved the plans on September 11.
