A GRANDMOTHER who worked at a Highbridge school for 45 years has retired and a kitchen has been named in her honour.

Nadine Garbett started working started working at The King Alfred School Academy in 1976 while her children were little and she has been serving up drinks, fruit and cakes for students and staff ever since.

The 81-year-old is well-known by generations of students and hundreds of staff at the school.

Nadine, who is known at the school as Nana Nade, has been unable to work due to the coronavirus pandemic and has retired after 45 years of service.

This week Nana Nade discovered that the kitchen in the staff room that she has been working in for the past few years will now be called ‘Nana Nade’s Kitchen’ and a photo will be displayed of her.

Nadine has also recently received a letter from the Queen to celebrate her 60th wedding anniversary – alongside a photo of Her Majesty.

The 81-year-old has worked in many different roles over the years including dinner lady, cleaner, cook, honourary ‘Nan’ and more.

Speaking from her garden, with husband Tony, Nadine, she said: “I absolutely adore the children – all the ones I have looked after.

“They mean the world to me, along with the staff in all the years I’ve been there. I love the school.”

Nadine has also seen all six of her grandchildren go through the school.

Principal Nathan Jenkins said: “Nadine is incredible and loved by everyone. She has done every every job you can imagine.

“When Covid19 rules allow, hopefully next year will be able to have a bigger party in the school to officially open ‘Nana Nade’s Kitchen’.”
