THERE will be temporary traffic lights and minor parking restrictions on a main road in Highbridge for three weeks.

Improvements are being made to the footpath from Burnham Road, by Churchfield School, to help pedestrian safety.

The work started yesterday (November 30) and there will be traffic management for 24 hours a day.

But Somerset County Council (SCC) have said efforts will be made to lift this at weekends if possible.

Councillor John Woodman, SCC’s Cabinet member for highways, said: “This work on Burnham Road is going to improve the safety of all pedestrians around the school, which is very busy in peak times.

“This may be disruptive in the short-term, but it will allow our teams to build a layout that will be of immense long-term benefit for all.

“The lights are in place for three weeks, so I would encourage people to plan ahead.”

The improvements will include built out kerb lines and a new zebra crossing.

Ross Minton, headteacher at Churchfield Church School, is “delighted” about the works.

“I am delighted that Somerset council have decided to put a zebra crossing on the road,” he said.

“Keeping the children safe is at the heart of what we do. We are all aware that the road is busy, traffic is an issue for the community, so anything that helps our children is a positive.

“Dave, the Lollipop man, is an essential part of the school family and he will continue to make sure that children and families can cross the road safely on their way to school.”

SCC have also said there will be minor parking restrictions in the area.
