THERE has been nearly 500 new coronavirus cases in Somerset over the past two days - but infection rates are dropping.

Somerset West and Taunton saw the largest increase in positive tests, with 150 new cases, according to the latest figures (released January 31).

At the moment, the rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population is 261.6 (down from 295.5).

South Somerset saw an increase of 125 positive tests, with an infection rate of 195.4 (down from 230.5).

There were 104 new cases in Sedgemoor, and this district has an infection rate of 210.3 (down from 247.6).

Mendip saw an increase of 78 positive tests, with an infection rate of 180 (down from 251.8).

The total number of cases in each district since the start of the pandemic is as follows: 

  • Somerset West and Taunton - 5,132
  • South Somerset - 4,447 
  • Sedgemoor - 4,384 
  • Mendip - 2,911
