THE Covid-19 infection rate in Somerset continues to show an encouraging downward trend, accordingly to the latest Public Health England figures.

The latest seven-day rolling figures reveal that the rate has dropped in three of the county council area's four districts and remained the same in the fourth.

The infection rate per 100,000 people in South Somerset has dropped to 89.7 from the previous day's 110.5.

In Somerset West and Taunton it is down to 153.4 (previously 165.7).

It remains at 169.7 in Sedgemoor.

And in Mendip it has dipped to 90 from 96.9

The latest 24-hour period saw 88 positive Covid tests in Somerset, taking the total number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic to 18,215.

The latest positive tests featured 19 in South Somerset, which now has an overal total of 4,778 confirmed cases); 35 in Somerset West and Taunton (overall 5,578); 16 in Sedgemoor (overall 4,750); and 18 in Mendip (overall 3,190).
