THREE year groups at a Somerset school have been sent home this week due to a number of cases of Covid among pupils and staff.

The Year 2, 3 and 4 groups at Weare Academy First School, in Axbridge, have been self isolating.

It comes after four pupils and two members of staff, one of them a class teacher, tested positive for the virus.

Headteacher Denise Mawdsley has written to parents explaining the situation.

In a letter to parents, she said: "We are concerned about the recent number of cases within our school and realise that this will cause you anxiety.

"We want to reassure you that we will continue to review our risk assessments in the light of these cases and that the school will be thoroughly cleaned, for the safety of our pupils and staff.

"Home learning will be provided for all our pupils required to isolate, as close to the planned curriculum as possible.

"Your child’s class teacher will be in contact with you on Class Dojo to clarify the next steps for you and your child.

"We are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England."
