SEDGEMOOR District Council will have the final word on whether to approve planning applications in Burnham-on-Sea and Brent Knoll which are currently in the works.

Multinational pizza chain Domino's is proposing to open a takeaway outlet in Burnham town centre, with a final decision set to be made by the district council's Development Control Committee this coming Tuesday (March 30).

If approved, the takeaway would move into a vacant building in Victoria Street, which had previously been occupied by a Barclays bank branch.

The planning application, reference 11/20/00151, is for "change of use from former bank to hot food takeaway, installation of extract and ventilation equipment, and minor external alterations."

The second application is by the Grange Hotel, in Brent Knoll, which is proposing a £4.2 million redevelopment.

The outline planning application is "for the expansion of the site to include the erection of a hotel with 36 suites, 64 lodges, a function room for events and banqueting, a leisure suite, a visitor centre and reception, and a restaurant/bar/cafe, together with access road improvements and parking".

The function venue would be "capable of hosting up to 700 guests", with the owners aiming to make the hotel "a benchmark destination facility for the whole of Somerset and the South West", to be marketed as "a credible option for business and wedding organisers throughout the UK".

The application also envisages a "significant local employment effect", as the expanded hotel and venue would need "a minimum of 120 full and part-time personnel".

The earliest date for a district council decision on this application (reference 07/20/00026) is April 24, 2021.
