THERE was "thick, black smoke" coming from the roof of a property on fire last night (April 2).

Fire crews attended the incident on Meadway, Woolavington near Bridgwater around 6.45pm.

Two engines from Bridgwater were sent to the fire, along with an aerial ladder platform.

The fire, which was believed to have started accidentally, caused 50 per cent damage to the roof and 50 per cent water and debris damage to the first floor of the property.

"Two fire appliances from Bridgwater were immediately mobilised by Fire Control and due to information gathered from further calls, Fire Control also mobilised an aerial ladder platform from Bridgwater," said a spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue.

"On arrival, the Incident Commander confirmed that thick black smoke was issuing from the roof and quickly got crews to work to tackle the fire using breathing apparatus, hose reel jets and a safety jet."
