IT was a busy weekend for Burnham-on-Sea’s Coastguards and BARB rescue hovercrafts, as they were called out to attend two separate incidents.

On Saturday (April 10), Burnham and Weston Coastguards, as well as BARB, were called to Uphill, amid concern for three people reported to be stranded in kayaks on the north side of Brean Down.

BARB's hovercrafts were launched from the sands to help Coastguards investigate whether the trio were safe, given that they were a distance out at the opening of the River Axe, in the gully that runs between the estuary and the shore.

The Burnham Coastguard team also headed to the top of Brean Down, from where they were able to establish that the kayakers were in fact fishing from their kayaks, and there was no need for further intervention.

The following day (April 11) saw Burnham's Coastguards and BARB's hovercrafts called to Brean beach at 4.08pm, after concerns were raised by the beach warden about three children wading through mud.

The warden had spotted the three girls a long distance down the beach, with a fast incoming tide nearby, in what was a potentially dangerous area.

Fortunately, the girls were able to get up the beach to safety as crews arrived on scene.

Coastguards gave the children safety advice and no further action was required.
