A COUPLE were rescued after becoming stuck while climbing an old quarry yesterday evening (May 2).

Police called fire crews to help with the climbers, who were stuck on a ledge at around 4pm.

A fire engine from Cheddar and a specialist rescue team from Bridgwater attended the incident near Old Coach Road, Cross, Axbridge.

Ambulance crews were also in attendance, but luckily the couple were unharmed.

"On arrival crews first had to locate the best access to where the couple were stuck as the climbers were approximately 100 foot off the ground level," said a spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

"Fire crews from Cheddar were then able to cut away thick brush making it easier to assist the climbers from the edge without the requirement of the specialist rescue equipment.

"The climbers were unharmed and duty of care was left with the police."
