A well-loved Cumbrian cinema is undergoing some big changes ahead of its reopening in September.

On top of having a brand new second screen installed, the Alhambra Cinema in Keswick is restoring the front of the 108-year-old building.

Seats are currently in the process of being removed and the floor is being dug up to accommodate for the new screen.

New windows are also being put in to restore the building "to its former glory".

Co-owner, Carol Rennie, said that there is still a place for independent cinemas in the twenty first century.

"I think it's the future," said Carol.

"The future of cinema has to be something that's offering more than just seeing the latest film, because people have now got such big screens and comfortable experiences at home.

"I think the future of cinema will be people coming for the whole experience.

"They want to be in a welcoming atmosphere and for the cinema itself to be something special."

Public donations are helping to fund the redevelopment of the buildings front, and investment from Carol's new business partner, Jonathan Moore, is helping to fund the new screen.

Carol said she hopes the new screen will allow the cinema to be more sustainable and attract more young people.

On the redevelopment of the building's front, Carol added:"It was a 108-year-old facade, and it was starting to look a bit tired.

"Some of the windows had been bricked up and covered in advertisement, and we're restoring it to its former glory.

"It was a really strong show of support from locals and regular visitors to Keswick.

"Loads of people remember coming here when they were young.

"We're really excited and we've got all sorts of initiatives planned.

"We haven't really catered for young people that well, but now that we've got the small screen, we're hoping to launch a Young Programmers initiative, where young people would come and programme films that they want to see."

The reopening of the cinema is planned for September around the time of the upcoming James Bond film, No Time to Die.

The cinema is still accepting donations to help it continue the restoration the front of the building.
