SHROPSHIRE Council's deputy leader Steve Charmley has narrowly won his race to be re-elected for Whittington.

In a two-candidate race, Councillor Charmley pipped his Liberal Democrat rival David Walker by just 34 votes, securing 638 compared to 604.

Mr Charmley also announced he wishes to remain in cabinet, if wanted, but deferred any leadership talk to after whether Cllr Peter Nuttall maintains his seat.

Meanwhile, it was no change at Gobowen, Selattyn and Weston Rhyn as Robert Macey and Mark Jones were returned by residents in the villages.

While Labour put up a strong fight – candidate Craig Emery received 634 votes – Cllrs Macey and Jones were solid winners with 813 and 791 respectively.

Liberal Democrat pair Clive and Clare Geary received 291 and 346 respectively.
