NEW research showing which areas of England are best represented at international level in men's football claims Tyrone Mings is the first Somerset-born player to do so.

Data compiled by the ACME Whistles company says Aston Villa star Mings is the only Somerset-born footballer to play for the England men's team.

However, it appears the firm only used data from online reference site, Wikipedia, to compile its data.

This presents a problem, as the information may not be as accurate - or specific - as it could be.

The site details how Mings was born in Bath, and indeed he attended Millfield School in Street before embarking on his football career.

However, as football fans in the county may know, goalkeeper Jack Butland is understood to have been born in Clevedon - and was certainly raised in the Somerset town.

He played for Clevedon United before being snapped up by Birmingham City, and has gone on to represent clubs including Stoke City and Leeds United.

And Butland, who currently plays for Premier League side Crystal Palace, has represented England nine times.

He was the youngest ever England international goalkeeper when making his debut against Italy in 2012 in a friendly match at the age of 19 years and 158 days.

Elsewhere, the ACME Whistles research concluded that:

• Ashington, Bury and Greenwich are the towns that have produced the most players with 4 each

• Liverpool is the district that has produced the most players at 15

• Greater London is the most productive county and the North West is the highest represented region

• Man Utd have had more English call ups than any other team at 71, just ahead of Liverpool at 68

• Players born in October are the most statistically likely to get called up
