RESIDENTS are being asked to help shape celebrations - and a memorial - for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee next summer.

Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council is going to light beacons in the parish on June 2, 2022, and is seeking ideas on where these beacons should be located, in highly-visible costal locations in both towns.

The council will also look to install a permanent memorial to commemorate this momentous occasion, and ideas from those in communities of both towns about where the feature should be installed are being invited.

"People are welcome to be as imaginative as they like, but please bear in mind it is anticipated that the project will be paid for by the town council using public funds," said a spokesperson.

To share your ideas for prominent beacon locations and a permanent memorial, email them to info@burnham-highbridge-tc.gov.uk.

As well as this, plans are in motion for a four-day commemorative celebration of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge in the first week of June next year.

Ideas for these events are being managed by Burnham Visitor Information Centre tourism manager, Ian Jefferies.

Plans for a street party to take place in Burnham-on-Sea High Street are in the pipeline for June 2, while on Friday, June 3, The Ritz Cinema and Burnham Chamber of Trade is looking to host a Music Through The Reign event which will feature 50s, 60s and 70s music.

On Saturday, June 4, there are plans for a live gig to take place in Burnham’s Pier Street, featuring music from the 80s until now by local band The Riverbrew.

Finally, parades are planned to march from both Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge separately on Sunday, June 5 2022.

Both parades will set-off from the respective towns and will come together at Apex Park, where a community day is planned, which looks to feature stalls and a tea party.

Ian said: “The ideas for the events are in their early stages, and, once planned, it will be a fabulous four-day event for both towns to commemorate such a special occasion.

“We want to encourage both communities in Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge to actively get involved in The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee events next summer, as we want to make sure our communities are heard.”

“If any interested community groups want to get involved in any of these events, email ianfromburnham@gmail.com.”
