FIREFIGHTERS rescued a person trapped in a blazing caravan in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, October 5).

Fire crews were sent to the incident at a caravan park in Highbridge shortly before 1am.

On arrival, they discovered the caravan in Sandacre Residential Park, in Old Burnham Road well alight.

A person was reported to be inside the caravan and firefighters battled the fire to rescue the occupier.

Fire engines from Taunton, Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea and Cheddar attended the incident.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Fire control received several 999 calls reporting a caravan on fire in a caravan park and quickly re-diverted a fire engine that was attending a different, but less serious incident close by and one additional fire engine.

"On arrival crews confirmed this static caravan was well alight with possibly one person still inside.

"Crews requested further assistance so another two crews were sent to assist.

"One person was rescued by the fire service and was handed over to ambulance crew on scene.

"The caravan was 75 percent destroyed by fire and was extinguished using six breathing apparatus; one hose reel jet; one safety jet; and a thermal image camera.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."

An entrance to the park is sealed off this morning and a police scientific investigations team is on site.
