TAUNTON St Andrew’s youngsters James Rew and George Thomas were very much to the fore as England Under 19s beat their Sri Lankan counterparts by 25 runs.

The match on Tuesday was the first of the five Youth One Day Internationals in Colombo.

The duo who both attend King’s College Taunton, made their debuts for Somerset in the Royal London One Day Cup during the summer and helped England Under 19s to post 242 all out off 49.3 overs after being asked to bat first .

Thomas opened the innings and stayed at the wicket until the 15th over to help England to 74 before he was third batsman out having made 27 off 42 balls with four 4s.

Rew who came in at the fall of the second wicket then shared a fourth wicket partnership of 86 in 15.2 overs to take the total onto 160 before he was dismissed for 40 off 52 balls with two fours.

In reply Sri Lanka Under 19s were bowled out for 217 in 47.3 overs.

The second match in the series against Sri Lanka is due to be played on Friday 3rd December.
