A NEW start-up business support service has launched in Sedgemoor to help residents get their business ideas off the ground.

Somerset Business Agency created the Sedgemoor Business Start-Up Support programme in partnership with the district council in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The initiative, which started in January, equips early-stage business founders with skills, knowledge, resources, and connections to understand the process of researching, planning and launching a new business or self-employment opportunity.

After an initial assessment that allows the organisers to learn more about budding business owners, the service offers support through one-to-one mentoring, personality profiling, workshops and webinars, and networking opportunities.

Caroline Derrick, Sedgemoor District Council's employment, skills and training manager, said: "The innovative programme is a great opportunity for those who may not have considered a business start-up or becoming self-employed before to find out more and gain vital knowledge."

Somerset Business Agency has also launched a new youth hub in Sedgemoor in partnership with the district council.

The project, known as The Hub, is both a digital platform and face-to-face advisory service for 18 to 24-year-olds to access information, advice, and guidance on employment, careers, and skills.

It aims to help them make connections, grow their confidence, access support, and learn how to prepare for the future.

The Hub will also offer one-to-one advice, employability skills workshops, and access to work opportunities.

Speaking about The Hub, Caroline said: "We are proud to be championing this project and so pleased to be in a position to launch with SBA CIC. We know the local community will benefit greatly from this project and we are looking forward to seeing individuals thrive."

Aisha Elliott, Somerset Business Agency project lead, added: "We see this as an opportunity for young people in Sedgemoor to get hands-on support and experience to achieve their goals.

"It's a chance for us to work closely with industry links and community partners in a dedicated, collaborative effort."
