The Burnham and Highbridge sea cadets saw success when they competed at the Somerset and Dorset District’s Sailing Regatta.

The cadets sent six competitors who took part in four different competitions at Weymouth Bay on Sunday, June 12.

The conditions were breezy and challenging, but that didn’t stop Louie, Oliver, James, Leo and Katie from giving their everything to try and win gold.

Burnham and Highbridge won medals in all four events with Louie and Oliver taking gold in the Open RS Quest. Oliver and James won gold in the Junior RS Quest, Katie won gold in the Junior Topper and Leo won bronze in the Open Zest.

Meanwhile, leading cadet Philippa was competing in a very different event on the North Devon coast, at the inaugural Saunton Paddle Surf Fest.

Phillipa competed in the Juniors and Ladies High Performance and International Class surf kayak classes, beating her mentor, sea cadet instructor Joe Sidwell in the same competition.

Phillipa walked away from the event with a second place in the Junior HP and IC classes, and made it to the finals of the Women’s HP, competing against some of the best female surf kayakers on the planet.

Commanding Officer, Lt Dom Gregory, said: "I’m incredibly proud of all the cadets who competed in these events this weekend.

"The unit has built up an exceptionally strong cohort of sailors in the last two years, from a starting point of virtually nothing. To win three out of the four classes entered is amazing. And knowing the quality of the kayakers that Phillipa was competing with, her results stand as nothing less than exceptional.”
