A BARN and hundreds of tonnes of hay and straw have been destoyed in a blaze tackled by firefighters from across Somerset, including Burnham-on-Sea. 

The “protracted incident” in Priddy, Mendip, began in the early hours of Friday, August 5 and is still being dealt with by fire crews today (Sunday).

A Burnham fire crew was joined by firefighters from Cheddar, Frome, Glastonbury, Martock, Nether Stowey, Shepton Mallet, Street, Wells, and Yeovil.

The Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service was supported by further units from Avon.

When the incident report was released this morning, a fire appliance from Street was still in attendance at the barn. 

A fire service spokesperson said: “Numerous fire appliances from both Devon and Somerset and also Avon FRS attended a fire that was reported to be involving a barn containing hay and straw. 

“The incident was a protracted incident that started on Friday morning in the early hours and today at 7:40am there is still one fire appliance from Street in attendance.

“This fire crew will shortly be leaving the incident but a reinspection is taking place later today. 

“The agricultural building measuring 40m by 30m was 100 per cent fire damaged and 600-800 tonnes of hay and straw destroyed. One further adjoining barn was 10 per cent damaged by fire.”
