A POPULAR hiking spot and tourist attraction in Sedgemoor could be set for major upgrades as a planning application has been submitted to Somerset Council.

The National Trust have applied to build a new car park, including the installation of a notice board, fencing, parking meter, bicycle storage area, and water refill point at the Black Rock area of Cliff Road, which runs through Cheddar Gorge.

According to the planning application, the site is "an incredibly popular starting point for walkers and cyclists travelling to the area by car."

Many visitors to the area end up parking their vehicles on the verges, which has caused significant erosion to the verges themselves, as well as the base of the cliffs.

To combat the issue, the National Trust have proposed a "modest" 20 car off-road parking area.

The car park would feature a standard pay machine, but also include extra amenities for visitors such as a stainless steel water refill machine, and an informative noticeboard spanning 2m tall and 2.5m wide.

A new bicycle shed for cyclists visiting Cheddar Gorge is also part of the proposal.

Updates to the application can be viewed by searching for the application number 17/23/00063 on the Somerset Council website, and comments will remain open until December 8.

Approval for the car park and visitor amenities could be given as early as December 9.
