As the Easter holidays approaches, a number of changes to recycling and rubbish collections will take place across Somerset.

The shift in schedules over the Easter weekend sees collections due on Good Friday, March 29, moved to Saturday, March 30.

There are no collections on Easter Monday, April 1, with all Easter week collections postponed until the next day, including Friday's collections taking place on Saturday, April 6.

Residents are advised to present boxes, bags and bins by 7am on collection day, or the night before.

Given the expected increase in waste due to schedule changes, Somerset Council suggests crushing and flattening waste to aid quicker collections and create more room in containers.

In addition, the council's recycling sites switch to summer operational hours from Monday, April 1.

All sites are open from 9am to 4pm on weekends, and from 9am to 6pm during the week.

Opening days, however, differ between sites, hence residents should confirm online before making a trip.

In light of the holiday season, Somerset Council is asking residents to be "good eggs" and recycle as much as possible.

Almost all Easter egg packaging can be recycled in weekly kerbside collections; flattened cardboard boxes should go in black recycling boxes, scrunched aluminium foil and plastic moulds should be placed in bright blue bags.

However, chocolate bar and sweet wrappers, plastic bags, plastic-foil pouches, and similar thin-soft plastic films remain non-recyclable through home collections or recycling sites.

These materials can be dropped off at participating supermarkets or via TerraCycle recycling schemes.

Please refer to the council's guide to supermarket and TerraCycle recycling schemes for additional information.
