A COUPLE who have lived in Burnham-on-Sea for over 55 years will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary next week.

Betty and Barry Jones, aged 93 and 90, moved to Burnham-on-Sea after meeting at a dance at Chedzoy Village Hall in the 1950s.

They will celebrate their platinum wedding anniversary on Friday, April 19.

The pair tied the knot at Chedzoy Church, when Betty was 23-years-old, and Barry was 20.

Betty was born and bred in Chedzoy, and Barry spent his early childhood and teen years in Bridgwater as his father worked on the railway.

The pair moved to Burnham-on-Sea in 1968, and haven't left since.

“It’s a lovely beach," Betty said.

"It’s not too big, but big enough, and it's friendly."

Barry added: “As you get older, it’s nice to have a bit of town, we’ve got good neighbours, and family nearby."

Betty, who worked with shoes until retirement, and Barry, who worked as a carpenter, now have two daughters, six grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

"We've also had about six or seven dogs," Barry said.

Speaking on the secret to a long and prosperous marriage, Betty explained: "We’ve always done give and take, and always laughed - we’ve always had a laugh, and enjoyed holidays."

Barry added: “We’ve always liked camping.”
