Conservative candidate for Bridgwater and Burnham, Ashley Fox has given his full support to retailers across the area.

The announcement was made after he had a meeting with Sam Walton, the first-ever ambassador for Burnham-on-Sea and the Burnham Retail Group (BRG).

During the meeting, they both discussed the challenges local small businesses face.

Vital matters such as anti-social behaviour, the need for improved CCTV coverage, and constant access to cash were also addressed.

Mr Fox also brought to the table the latest government directive which states that persistent or abusive shoplifters will face stiffer penalties.

Creating a standalone criminal charge for those assaulting retail workers has been proposed.

This move delivers a clear message that this form of inappropriate behaviour will be met with severe consequences.

Offenders could face up to six months in prison, an unlimited fine, and be banned from visiting certain shops.

Violating these Criminal Behaviour Orders is in itself a criminal offence and could carry a five-year maximum prison sentence.

In more extreme cases, crimes causing severe bodily harm with intent could warrant a life sentence.

Burnham and Highbridge Weekly News: The announcement was made after he had a meeting with Sam Walton

Ashley Fox said: "It is clear to me that those working in the town are very proud at what it has to offer, but more needs to done to support our fantastic local businesses here in Burnham."

He highlighted how the low ratio of empty shops compared to other towns is a proof of the town's vibrant independent retail scene.

However, he also acknowledged the concerns raised by local businesses over anti-social behaviour, which has even led to the occasional shutdowns of retail stores.

Expressing his satisfaction over the government's renewed focus on tackling anti-social behaviour and shoplifting, he noted: "I was pleased to meet Sam and look forward to campaigning alongside the BRG to make Burnham the best place possible to live, work, and shop."

Sam Walton reciprocated the positivity, stating: "It was great to meet Ashley and discuss how we can support some of Burnham’s brilliant small businesses.

"I am pleased that he has given his support to our campaign, and I look forward to working with him to improve our town."
