BURNHAM-on-SEA and Highbridge drivers are among Somerset's most dangerous, according to new research.

Research by the Swansway Motor Group has analysed DVLA data to find out exactly where people have racked up the most points for reckless driving.

The Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge area ranked fourth most dangerous (excluding North Somerset) with 1,771 points given across 25,348 licenses.

The Bridgwater area ranked highest on the list of Somerset regions, with a total of 3,889 points landed on licenses among the 53,849 drivers across the TA6 and TA7 postcodes.

This number ranks Bridgwater just above the TA1 and TA2 postal areas of Taunton, which ranked second in the county with 3,756 points racked up by a total of 58,197 drivers in the region.

In third place was Frome, with a total of 1,961 points across 28,768 licenses, Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge with 1,771 points across 25,348, followed then by Shepton Mallet with 1,187 points, and Wells with 987.

According to Swansway Motor Group, the most common reasons for people getting points on their licence include:

  • Speeding
  • Using a mobile device whilst driving
  • Careless driving - usually meaning to cause no harm but can have serious consequences -
  • Dangerous driving – actively reckless driving or aggressive behaviour
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
