Up to 40 new homes will be delivered in a small Somerset village - four years after plans were originally approved.

Strongvox Homes Ltd, J. D. W. Puddy & A. E. Reader originally put forward plans in July 2019 to build 50 homes at Beavers Lodge Farm on Lympsham Road in  Lympsham, between Highbridge and Weston-super-Mare.

Following three years of negotiations with planning officers, the revised plans for 40 homes on the site were narrowly approved by Sedgemoor District Council's development committee in July 2022.

After four years of further negotiations, the legal agreements for the development have finally been signed off by Somerset Council - meaning construction could at long last get under way before the end of this year.

The site lies at the eastern edge of the village near the A370 Bridgwater Road, which connects Weston-super-Mare to the A38 leading to Bridgwater and Cheddar.

The sole vehicular access will be from Lympsham Road opposite Coppice Cottage, with two pedestrian access points being provided - including one leading towards the sports club and the primary school.

Under the newly-signed legal agreements with Somerset Council, no homes within the site can be occupied until both pedestrian connections have been successfully delivered.

The homes will range from one-bedroom maisonettes to four-bedroom houses, with 16 of the 40 properties being "local needs affordable homes".

These affordable homes will be offered at a mixture of social rent and shared ownership, and will be offered to people with close connections to the village (such as having a family member living there, or working within the parish).

A spokesperson for Focus On Design (representing the Taunton-based developer) said: "The site comprises a comprehensive residential scheme with associated landscaping, green spaces and sustainable drainage features.

"The key to the development concept was to create a high-quality environment that responded to and echoed the character of Lympsham, and to deliver much-needed housing, including affordable homes of varying tenures and mix.

"The architecture, materials and detailing will be consistent across the scheme to create a strong and vibrant appearance to the public realm."

Strongvox has recently been delivering the Cricketers Farm site on the A39 Cannington Road in Nether Stowey (on the edge of the Quantock Hills), as well as teasing plans for 40 new homes on Honiton Road in Trull (on part of a protected 'green wedge' separating the village from Taunton).

Construction on the new Lympsham homes is expected to begin in the coming months, meaning the first properties could be on the market to potential buyers by the summer of 2027.
