BURNHAM'S annual fireworks display still went with a bang on Sunday night, despite being delayed for more than 45 minutes.

A technical hitch only slightly dampened spirits of the thousands who turned out to watch the spectacular display on Burnham beach, as fizzing fireworks and booming rockets lit up the town and wowed young and old alike.

The high-octane show, put-on by firework company Skyburst, was saved by workers who had to dig in hundreds of metres of cable when a new hi-tech piece of launching equipment malfunctioned.

Cllr Derick Cooper, who led the crowd on a countdown to the first firework, told the Weekly News: “It was a shame about the delay and we do thank people for their patience.

“Considering it wasn't the company's fault, they did a great job to fix the problem.

“The end result was a great display, with nothing missing from it.”

Sunday's event was the second display organised and funded by the Burnham and Highbridge Town Council.

Crowds lined the esplanade to catch a glimpse of the fireworks, which dazzled in all the colours of the rainbow.

One Burnham reveller, David Bowls, said it was the best firework show he had seen in years.

He told the Weekly News: “I've never seen a display done to music before - it certainly made it special.

“The wait was rather frustrating and the traffic was terrible at the end of the night, but the fireworks were worth a bit of hassle.

“You can't put a price on enjoyment like that.”
