CARNIVAL night passed peacefully in Highbridge and Burnham, according to police.

Officers believe several alcohol seizures they made before the procession began nipped any potential antisocial behaviour in the bud.

No arrests were made and no rowdy or nuisance behaviour was reported, despite thousands of people descending on the two towns in the space of hours.

Sgt Ian Kennett, of Burnham and Highbridge police, told the Weekly News: “The night went very well and any incidents of antisocial behaviour were dealt with quickly and didn't escalate.

“It appears everyone enjoyed themselves without causing any trouble. We did make a lot of alcohol seizures beforehand and tipped the alcohol away.”

Sgt Kennett believes a high visibility police presence in the crowd also helped to make it an incident-free evening.

He added: “There were a lot of local officers present on the route looking out for antisocial behaviour and dealing with it.

“We must have done a good job as things didn't get out of hand and we are very pleased.
