SEAFRONT protestors could be drawn back into battle against plans for a controversial block of flats in Burnham - one year after fighting a campaign to keep them out.

Victorious members of the Allendale Road Group saw off a challenge for 14 flats at the end of their street in November last year, when a Government Planning Inspector threw out an appeal by developer Moose Roper.

In his report the inspector claimed the proposed building would have a 'harmful effect on the character and appearance of the surrounding area'.

But now, almost exactly 12 months after the decision, the developer has confirmed to the Weekly News that an application for 13 new flats will be submitted to Sedgemoor District Council.

Andrew Beard, “We are coming back in with a traditional Victorian design build.

“The scheme is fairly similar in footprint - it would be 13 flats instead of 14.

“A planning application should be with the council next week.”

When the Weekly News approached the Allandale Road Group about the plans, they indicated that they would be willing to look over new designs.

But he warned that the group would resurrect its campaign against the flats, if they did not meet their requirements.

David Jenkins, group leader, said: “We would be quite happy to talk to them providing they have made changes proposed by the planning inspector.

“We would oppose anything that didn't fit in with the inspector's report.

“I think the group will be looking into these plans very closely indeed.
