TODAY (September 9) is Emergency Services Day across the UK.

The day, also known as 999 day, is to support those who have served or are serving in our emergency services.

It also highlights the work of the services, educates the public and promotes volunteering opportunities.

In Somerset, Somerset West and Taunton Council (SWT) will be raising the 999 flag at Deane House in Taunton this morning.

A flag will also be flown at West Somerset House in Williton.

The flag ceremony will be led by the Mayor’s chaplain, Rev James Clapham, with the Mayor of Taunton, Cllr Sue Lees, inviting guests to observe a minute’s silence.

Cllr Sue Lees added: “The emergency services are always there for us when we need them, working tirelessly to serve and protect the community.

“We are honoured to host this important event and show our lasting respect and gratitude for all our emergency services, and to recognise the many ways they help support us all.”

The chair of SWT, Cllr Hazel Prior-Sankey, will also be speaking along with Chris Davies, deputy lord lieutenant of Somerset; Thomas Sheppard, high sheriff of Somerset; and representatives from the Avon and Somerset Police, the Devon and Somerset Fire Service and the South Western Ambulance Service Trust.

Cllr Hazel Prior -Sankey said: “SWT is proud to show its support for the emergency services across our area by flying the 999 flag.

“The events of the last 18 months have only served to highlight their dedication and it is wonderful that we have this opportunity to show our lasting appreciation.”

Emergency services in Somerset have taken to social media to share their thanks to those who work alongside them.

Avon and Somerset Police said: "We want to say a huge thank you to all those who work or volunteer in the police, fire, ambulance, NHS and search and rescue services.

"Thank you for all that you do to keep our communities safe."

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue held a two-minutes silence at 9am to remember those who have lost their lives protecting the country.
