Western Counties West
Burnham-on-Sea 20, St Ives 22
BURNHAM-ON-SEA RFC dropped to the bottom of the Western Counties West standings after an agonising loss at home to St Ives, who went second with their two-point victory.
It was the hosts who took the lead, Matt Lane grabbing an eight-minute try converted by Tim Piper, but the away side made it 7-7 with Treve Polglase’s score, Rhys Brownfield adding the extras.
Harry Parton then gave the visitors a 12-7 advantage, trimmed by three points as Piper slotted a penalty, and extended by Tom Nicholas crossing right on half time.
Having been 17-10 down at the break, the Seasiders came out strongly, and Jake Allen went over – Piper converting to level it up.
The scores stayed even until the hour mark, at which point Liam Jolly scored St Ives’ fourth try – again unconverted – to put the visitors 22-17 up.
Piper took his personal tally for the day to 10 points with another penalty, but despite St Ives going down to 14 men for the final 10 minutes – Ben Jenkin sent to the bin – the home side could not snatch a late win.
Sidmouth’s 15-5 win at Crediton lifted them off the foot of the table at Burnham’s expense; both teams have 10 points and lie four adrift of third-bottom Falmouth.
There are no league games this weekend, so Burnham return to action on November 25, at fourth-from-bottom Tiverton.
