THE annual President’s Day was once again a very well supported event, with more than 70 golfers taking to the Brean course to compete for the prestigious Trophy in memory of Bert and Marie House on Saturday.

Member/guest pairings certainly seemed to be the winning formula on the day in the Pairs betterball format, as they featured prominently by taking the top four prizes.

The winning duo were John Ham and his guest Ged Gage, who combined superbly to hand in a winning total of 45 points.

The pair both have involvement off track with the Somerset Rebels speedway team and they raced clear of the rest to win by two points from a quartet of parings on 43.

Director of golf Andrew March had to work overtime to separate the next four scorecards, but it was the ladies duo of Lesley Millard and her guest Eileen Parnell from Cannington who were eventually awarded second after a stunning back nine of 25 points.

Club chairman Tony Roper joined forces with Steve Thomas from Weston to take third, with a better back nine than Simon Baunton and his partner Tom Marshfield (Burnham & Berrow).

Rounding out the prizes was former winner of the event Steve Jones, who partnered his daughter Millie to take fifth place.

Various nearest the pin prizes were also up for grabs and Gary Badman, Pete Dunn and Mike Hurman collected those at the prizegiving after lunch.

Thanks also went to Robin Williams and his team for the condition of the golf course after a difficult start to the year.

The following day saw the Monthly Stableford contested and only three players beat their handicaps and only one of those manage to top the 40-point mark.

Nigel Hodges was that man, as he racked up 42 points on his way to Division 2’s top spot.

Runner-up to Hodges was Oliver Poole, who actually had the second best score overall, with his 39-point card but was unlucky to find Hodges ahead of him in the same division.

Club captain Mike Carter took third on 33.

John Ham was third player under his handicap on the day as he collected he second win of the weekend in Division 3 with 37 points.

He followed up his President’s Day success 24 hours earlier by winning by three from Matt Crosby with Jason Leakey taking third with 33.

Division 1 was claimed by Wayne Barrett but only after a countback with Adam Cox.

Both scored 35 points with Barrett having the better back nine; Mark Hatfield was third on 31.

Barrie Tucker is the early leader after the opening round of the Senior Captain’s Cup.

He went round in a superb nett 63 to win by two from seniors secretary Tony Roper.

Brian Read continued his steady recent form with a nett 67 to take third.

With two more rounds of the event to go over the next six weeks and each player’s best two scores to count in the overall standings, Tucker has put himself in a strong position to land the silverware.

Two days later the Seniors whitewashed their counterparts from Cannington in their latest inter-club match.

They were victorious in all six matches in bright but breezy conditions at Brean on Thursday afternoon.

The Ladies didn’t fare so well at Weston in their match last week, although the final scoreline of 4-0 to the hosts doesn’t tell the full story, as three of those results were only decided on the home hole. Ladies captain elect Lyn Bird did enjoy some success, as she won the British Heart Foundation Golf day at Wheathill Golf Club last Tuesday with 38 points.

And there was a first victory at Brean for Mick Smith, as he won the Midweek Stableford on Wednesday.

Having only recently become a member, he recorded 38 points to win by one from Adam Cox, with John Rabbetts third on 36.
